Award in Academic Writing and Research Skills

Overview

This course has been developed to equip learners with the necessary knowledge, skills, and competences to be able to carry out academic research and writing autonomously and in an effective manner.


Awarding Body & Accreditation

This qualification is awarded by eie Institute of Education and is accredited by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority (MFHEA). MFHEA deems this Award to be at MQF Level 5 (12 ECTS) of the Malta Qualifications Framework and the European Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning.

Competences

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:


  • Carry out research through the proper identification of a research question, implementation of literature review as well as source various literature from trusted sources.
  • Comply with the ethical considerations which are crucial when carrying out research
  • Be responsible for the correct use of various data collection and analysis techniques
  • Be responsible for the clear and effective presentation of an academic writing project
  • Carry out constructive criticism on various literature

Knowledge

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have been exposed to the following:


  • Define and critically describe the terms ‘academic writing’ and ‘research skills’
  • Critically discuss and analyse the use of Kolb’s Learning Cycle
  • Recall and critically reflect on the having effective self-assessment skills
  • Critically describe and analyse in detail the term reflective practice and assess the importance of implementing reflective practice when carrying out academic writing and research
  • Identify the importance of mastering time management techniques to ensure the one’s success in a research project
  • List and critically assess various styles of learning and their best implementation techniques
  • Critically define and differentiate between qualitative and quantitative research methods
  • Identify and critically discuss the importance of constructive criticism

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the following skills:


  • Plan one’s research project effectively using SMART objectives
  • Use appropriate referencing techniques and cite work accordingly
  • Develop own writing skills and academic abilities
  • Justify and assess ideas, theories and information obtained from various sources such as books and articles when carrying out academic work

How this award will be taught

This award shall be taught with a student-centred approach whereby learners are encouraged to take active participation in their own learning. Learners shall be presented with PowerPoint presentations, case-study examples, and other interactive learning materials. Students will be asked to discuss and exchange communication amongst each other (classroom or online, as per learning mode chosen).


Assessment

This module shall be assessed with an assignment (75%) whereby learners are expected to present an original piece of work including properly referenced literature and practical examples. The assignment has a word count limit of 1,500 words. Moreover, learners shall also be subject to classroom assessment including discussions, multiple-choice assessments and/or observation (25%). Moreover, learners are expected to obtain a minimum of 50% of the total mark in order to successfully pass from the course
