Overview
This course equips learners with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively align the human resource with the overall strategy of the organisation.
Programme Description
Learners will be exposed to the objectives of aligning such a plan with the strategy and outline the functions and role of human resource management within organisations.
Awarding Body & Accreditation
This qualification is awarded by eie Institute of Education and is accredited by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority (MFHEA). MFHEA deems this Award to be at MQF Level 5 (12 ECTS) of the Malta Qualifications Framework and the European Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning.
Learning Outcomes
Competences
At the end of the course, the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:
- Monitor and critically assess various theories of human resource management and how these support managers in effectively managing the workforce
- Ensure the correct use of various tools including balanced scorecard, SWOT, and other management tools in everyday activity in relation to human resource management
- Collaborate with members of the human resource department in the development of an effective human resource strategic plan
Knowledge
At the end of the course, the learner will have been exposed to the following:
- Define ‘human resource management’ and assess how it has evolved throughout the years
- Critically assess the links between the overall organisation strategy and the human resource strategy
- Define and describe the role and function of human resource department within an organisation
- List and critically discuss various functions of human resources including recruitment, selection, training and development, reward, employee motivation, and others
- Define the term ‘emotional intelligence’ and identify its main use in effective human resource management
- List and discuss the potential benefits and disadvantages of using information technology in human resources to automate certain processes
- Describe and reflect on the affects that organisational culture has on the overall performance of the organisation
Skills
At the end of the course, the learner will have acquired the following skills:
- Evaluate the current theories and practices which are found in contemporary human resource management
- Demonstrate understanding of the process that goes into recruitment and selection of employees
- Exhibit in-depth understanding of the importance of reward, appraisal, and development of employees and its effects on employee motivation
- Identify the importance of involving employees in decision-making
- Practice effective human resource management techniques ensuring inclusion and diversity
- Show in-depth understanding of how organisational culture affects overall human resource management
- Identify the importance of creating a learning organisation and the importance of providing employees with an opportunity for continuous professional development
- Discuss the role of ethics and ethical considerations, as well as laws and regulations in the effective management of the workforce
- Use tools which assist management in the effective management of employees including the Balanced Scorecard, SWOT analysis, and other management tools
- Demonstrate how emotional intelligence is a crucial part of effective human resource management
- Use various information technology platforms to assist human resource tasks and functions
Programme Delivery
This module shall be taught with a student-centred approach whereby learners are encouraged to take active participation in their own learning. Learners shall be presented with PowerPoint presentations, case-study examples, and other interactive learning materials. Students will be asked to discuss and exchange communication amongst each other (classroom or online, as per learning mode chosen).
Assessment
This course shall be assessed with a 3-hour time-constrained examination (75%). Furthermore, learners are to undergo a classroom assessment (Face to face or online, as per Learning mode chosen), including discussions, multiple-choice assessments, and/or observation (25%). Learners are expected to obtain a minimum of 50% of the total mark to successfully pass from the course.
