Overview
This course allows learners to become knowledgeable on the required skills and knowledge to be able to effectively manage within organisations. Learners will be exposed to different types of leadership styles, and how leadership differs from management. Furthermore, learners will also be able to fully comprehend the management process and how leaders and managers affect organisational culture and ultimately performance and success.
Awarding Body & Accreditation
This qualification is awarded by eie Institute of Education and is accredited by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority (MFHEA). MFHEA deems this Award to be at MQF Level 5 (12 ECTS) of the Malta Qualifications Framework and the European Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning.
Learning Outcomes
Competences
At the end of the course, the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:
- Carry out effective decision making and implement various problem-solving techniques
- Manage various risks and crisis at the workplace using various management and leadership techniques depending on the situation
- Create a plan to lead effectively and apply the techniques learnt throughout the duration of the module
- Be responsible for the effective implementation of the management process
Knowledge
At the end of the course, the learner will have been exposed to the following:
- Define and critically comment upon the terms ‘management’ and ‘leadership’ and critically assess the main differences and similarities
- Have knowledge of the functions of management and how they applied in the main areas of management
- Assess in detail the management process including planning, organising, co-ordinating, directing and controlling
- Recall the elements which make a good leader and a good manager
- List and critically analyse the main differences between different types of leaders including transactional leader, transformational leader, servant leader, democratic leader, bureaucratic leader, charismatic leader, and laissez-faire leader
- Reflect on the role of the leader on the overall culture of the organisation
- Identify the need for continuous improvement and change management at the workplace
- Recall the best ways of dealing with change and overcoming barriers to change
- Identify the importance of encouraging teamwork at the workplace
- Define ‘emotional intelligence’ and its importance in effective leadership
Skills
At the end of the course, the learner will have acquired the following skills:
- Communicate effectively with various stakeholders and during various circumstances including meetings, consultations, interviewing, networking, counselling, and others
- Use decision making and problem-solving skills acquired throughout the duration of the programme
- Demonstrate how emotional intelligence can be used to lead effectively
- Discuss the management process and identify the importance of planning, organising, leading, and controlling in an organisation
- Demonstrate understanding of the importance of managing, motivating, and directing people to ensure organisational success
- Apply the business management process effectively
Teaching Methodology
This module shall be taught with a student-centred approach whereby learners are encouraged to take active participation in their own learning. Learners shall be presented with PowerPoint presentations, case-study examples, and other interactive learning materials. Students will be asked to discuss and exchange communication amongst each other (classroom or online, as per learning mode chosen).
Assessment
This module shall be assessed with an assignment (75%) whereby learners are expected to present an original piece of work including properly referenced literature and practical examples. The assignment has a word count limit of 1,500 words. Learners are also expected to undergo a classroom assessment including discussions, multiple-choice assessments and/or observation (25%). Moreover, learners are expected to obtain a minimum of 50% of the total mark in order to successfully pass from the module.

Upon Successful completion of this course, you will be able to recover (if eligible) up to 70% (through tax credits) of expenses on both the registration and tuition fees paid when starting the course.
