Overview
This course allows learners to become knowledgeable within the field of business communication. Managers require effective communication skills to effectively communicate within the organisation, as well as to manage teams successfully. Learners shall be exposed to different types of communication methods and channels which can be used and applied in a business setting.
Awarding Body & Accreditation
This qualification is awarded by eie Institute of Education and is accredited by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority (MFHEA). MFHEA deems this Award to be at MQF Level 6 (12 ECTS) of the Malta Qualifications Framework and the European Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning.
Learning Outcomes
Competences
At the end of the course, the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:
- Carry out frequent and effective meetings with teams and employees to ensure frequent communication
- Develop a communication strategy
- Be responsible for choosing the correct method of communication such as online, in writing, face-to-face, and others, depending on the audience one needs to communicate with
- Propose and evaluate a working environment which encourages open and positive communication
- Lead by example and employ an open communication policy as a manager
- Deal with potential communication barriers and challenges which might arise at the workplace
Knowledge
At the end of the course, the learner will have been exposed to the following:
- Critically evaluate different types of communication in business management, including bottom-up and top-down communication approaches
- Have knowledge of the importance of communicating effectively various policies and procedures of an organisation to employees
- Critically examine the importance of frequent communication between management and employees
- Critically assess the different types of audiences a manager communicates with in a business setting
- Assess the important characteristics of a good communicator such as active listening, constructive feedback, and asking powerful questions
- Critically analyse the importance of providing and receiving feedback and constructive criticism
- Have knowledge of various non-verbal cues such as posture, tone of voice, eye contact, clothes, and other cues which indicate how a person is truly feeling
- List and critically discuss any potential communication challenges and risks which might arise at the workplace and analyse ways of overcoming such challenges
Skills
At the end of the course, the learner will have acquired the following skills:
- Practice positive communication using a positive tone, and being mindful of the non-verbal messages one sends
- Create an environment which encourages open communication
- Communicate in a clear, transparent, and understandable manner avoiding riddles
- Communicate decisions and changes with employees in an effective manner to avoid any risks or challenges
- Provide effective and prompt feedback or answer to questions received from employees
- Demonstrate ability to paraphrase what an employee or a colleague has communicated to yourself in words you understand to make sure that the message passed on is in fact correct and clear
- Be mindful of the non-verbal cues that others give when communicating
- Practice various techniques for providing feedback and accept constructive criticism
Course Delivery
This course shall be taught with a student-centred approach whereby learners are encouraged to take active participation in their own learning. Learners shall be presented with PowerPoint presentations, case-study examples, and other interactive learning materials. Students will be asked to discuss and exchange communication amongst each other (classroom or online, as per learning mode chosen).
Assessment
This course shall be assessed with an individual presentation (75%), and a reflective journal (5%). Learners are also expected to undergo a classroom assessment including discussions, multiple-choice assessments, and/or observation (20%). Moreover, learners are expected to obtain a minimum of 50% of the total mark to successfully pass from the course.

Upon Successful completion of this course, you will be able to recover (if eligible) up to 70% (through tax credits) of expenses on both the registration and tuition fees paid when starting the course.
