Program Overview

This program deepens students' understanding of mathematics through advanced courses in real analysis, abstract algebra, and mathematics education. It connects abstract mathematics to K-12 teaching, preparing students to effectively teach and engage students in mathematical concepts. The program includes research and methods courses, as well as electives and a capstone project, providing a comprehensive foundation for teaching and research in mathematics education.

Program Outline

Outline:

Program Overview:

  • Students have the opportunity to study deep, rich mathematics and connect it to the mathematics they teach.
  • All students take Real Analysis and Abstract Algebra, which extend, deepen, and abstract the ideas of arithmetic, school algebra, and calculus.
  • They also take Algebraic Structures in School Mathematics and Geometric Structures in School Mathematics, which make explicit links between abstract mathematics and the mathematics taught in K-12 schools.
