Program Overview

Spanish, B.A.

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish from St. Francis College is right at home in the cultural mecca of Brooklyn. A major in Spanish prepares students for various career opportunities in the fields of teaching, bilingual education, interpreting, translation, business, mass media communication, journalism, science and technology, and global economy. Students can also pursue a master’s degree in Spanish.

Students in the B.A. in Spanish program in New York City will journey through an in-depth study and analysis of the Spanish language and its written form, as well as the literature and culture of people of Hispanic descent. The Spanish language major program introduces students to the Spanish-speaking world from global and multicultural perspectives. Students are expected to have command of the Spanish language and to understand the culture or cultures the language reflects.

DEPARTMENT MISSION

The mission of the Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) department is to provide a structured Spanish language major program within which students create their own education pathways. By approaching topics such as sustainability, migration and gender from the perspectives of disciplines such as biology, business management, English, digital humanities, philosophy and communications, B.A. in Spanish students build skills and develop a critical mindset to comprehend and solve multifaceted real-world problems. The department, which places an emphasis on a customizable educational program, includes majors in Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS), International Cultural Studies (ICS) and Spanish.

CENTERED AROUND STUDENT SUCCESS

St. Francis College students receive a system of wrap-around support from day one to post-graduation. Within the robust support, students gain in-depth insight and guidance in academic, internship and career-path options via the Center for Student Success, Center for Career Exploration and Center for Learning and Leadership.

CLUBS AND HONORS PROGRAM

Numerous SFC clubs and organizations offer academic and social support to Spanish Language Major students, including the Latin American Society and International Cultural Societies Club.

Qualified bachelor’s degree in Spanish students seeking an additional academic challenge can participate in the St. Francis College Honors Program, where our New York City students participate in a series of small, intensive seminars, trips and other activities that lead towards a senior thesis.

Our New York College is also home to 15 national honor societies and its own Duns Scotus Honors Society, which recognizes students for their academic and community achievements.
