Program Overview


The Mechatronics Electromechanical Technician Training (METT) program at St. Petersburg College equips students with the skills and knowledge to work as Electro-Mechanical and Mechatronics Technologists and Technicians. The program offers various pathways, including Electronics, Electrical Preventative Maintenance, Ready to Work, Mechanical Preventative Maintenance, and Fluid Power, covering topics such as basic electricity, robotics, PLC systems, and mechanical systems. Graduates are qualified for employment in industries like HVAC, robotics, manufacturing, and defense.

Program Content and Structure

The Mechatronics Electromechanical Technician Training (METT) program at St. Petersburg College is a comprehensive training program designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to work as Electro-Mechanical and Mechatronics Technologists and Technicians. The program consists of three courses:


Basic Electricity & Electronics (AMT 107):

This course introduces students to various elements of basic electricity, such as the identification of electrical symbols, interpretation of schematics, cross-referencing prints, tracing circuits, and interpreting charts.


Robotics (AMT 105):

This course introduces students to basic components, types of robots, safety, programming, and integrating PLC with robot applications. It also covers robot maintenance, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting robots using error codes.


PLC (Allen-Bradley) (AMT 103):

This course provides an overview of Allen-Bradley PLC system architectures, basic numbering systems, computer terminology, and industrial communications. Students will learn about wiring and configurations of I/O modules, ladder logic programming, and function block programming.

Electronics Pathway


Basic Electricity & Electronics (AMT 107):

This module introduces students to various elements of basic electricity, such as the identification of electrical symbols, interpretation of schematics, cross-referencing prints, tracing circuits, and interpreting charts.


PLC (Allen-Bradley) (AMT 103):

This module provides an overview of Allen-Bradley PLC system architectures, basic numbering systems, computer terminology, and industrial communications. Students will learn about wiring and configurations of I/O modules, ladder logic programming, and function block programming.


Controls & Instrumentation (AMT 106):

This module teaches students how to troubleshoot, replace, and install circuit boards, sensors, and photoeyes. Students will learn how loop tuning will assure quality standards, what different modes of control have on maintaining process quality, and how to troubleshoot motors and variable speed drives, interpret relay logic, and size components for various applications.

This module teaches students how to read, manipulate, and understand a mechanical part print, recognize, identify, describe, and relate the components used in schematics and symbols.

This module teaches students how to check for wear and tear, replace components to avoid breakdown, lubricate, clean, and test to keep equipment optimized for efficiency and accuracy.

Mechanical Systems/Mechanical Drives/Power Transmissions (AMT 108):

This module covers mechanical systems, mechanical drive systems, and power transmissions. Students will learn about flexible chain drives, how to install, align, and maintain shaft couplings, and the various components of mechanical systems, such as bearings, shafts, seals, brakes, clutches, gears, and cams.


Fluid Power and Electrohydraulics/Pneumatics (AMT 101):

This module covers principles of fluid power, calculations of physical properties of fluids, troubleshooting fluid power components and systems with an emphasis on safety. Students will learn how to use control valves, pumps, actuators, accumulators, reservoirs, fluids, filters, hose, piping, tubing, and preventive and predictive maintenance techniques.
