Overview

The Education Technical Education and Training program consists of three specializations: Business Education Teacher Education, Career and Technical Education, and Family and Consumer Sciences Education.

Program Details

Specializations

• Business Education Teacher Education: leads to Ohio teacher licensure in integrated business for grades 712.
• Career and Technical Education: designed for individuals who are teaching or wish to teach technical subjects in high schools, career centers, correctional facilities, community and technical colleges, and other related educational institutions.
• Family and Consumer Sciences Education: designed for individuals interested in teaching the subject area for grades 712.

Admission Criteria

Enrollment

Students directly enroll as pre-majors with the potential to apply for the major once a significant amount of the General Education and pre-major courses have been completed. Students must earn a minimum GPA of 2.75. The selection process is competitive, and completion of the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance.

Curriculum

Program Structure

The program is designed to prepare students to sit for applicable licensure or certification in Ohio. Students pursuing the Business Education Teacher Education and Family and Consumer Sciences specializations complete coursework and field experience (student teaching) to fulfill Ohio teacher licensure requirements in their respective areas. Students pursuing Career and Technical Education complete core coursework in addition to courses in a content area selected in consultation with a faculty advisor.

Career Opportunities

Job Prospects

Graduates of the Business Education specialization will be eligible for Ohio teacher licensure in integrated business for grades 712. Graduates of the Family and Consumer Sciences specialization will be eligible for Ohio teacher licensure in Family and Consumer Sciences for grades 712. Students who complete the Career and Technical Education specialization are eligible for positions teaching technical subjects in high schools, career centers, correctional facilities, community/technical colleges, and other related educational institutions.

Internship and Field Experiences

Practical Training

Field experiences are introduced early and culminate in an extended student teaching experience senior year. Teacher education is conceptualized as an apprenticeship with equal parts content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and skill.

Honors and Scholars Programs

College of Education and Human Ecology Honors Program

The program offers students rigorous coursework and opportunities to work closely with faculty to design and complete a research project. Students in this program also have access to smaller classes, priority scheduling, and unique housing opportunities.

Student Organizations

Workforce Development and Education Student Forum

The forum provides opportunities for students to learn about career opportunities and workforce development initiatives in central Ohio and gives undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to socialize with each other and with their faculty.

Possible Careers

Career Paths

There is presently a shortage of qualified teachers in both integrated business education and family and consumer sciences education. Graduates of the Business Education track will find a robust job market awaiting them. Students who complete the Career and Technical Education specialization may also find opportunities to work in corporate settings as corporate trainers or managers in business and industry.
