Film Studies Program
The Film Studies program at Ohio State University offers students the flexibility to focus on film theory and history, screenwriting, or production. This major provides a pathway through the vast world of cinema, preparing students for careers in film, video, and media production, as well as distribution, film development, casting, talent management, film archiving, journalism, arts criticism, and education.
Program Overview
The major in Film Studies comprises at least 39 credit hours. Students take core courses, as well as courses in pre-1950s, multicultural, non-industrial, and non-fiction components. Additionally, students choose film studies electives and a focus area in film theory, screenwriting, or film production.
Curriculum
- Core courses (six credit hours)
- Introduction to Film (English 2263) is a prerequisite for the major and fulfills part of the general education requirements for the College of Arts and Sciences
- Pre-1950s, multicultural, non-industrial, and non-fiction components (three credit hours each)
- Film studies electives (nine credit hours)
- Focus area in film theory, screenwriting, or film production (nine credit hours)
- Senior seminar (three credit hours)
Internship Opportunities
Internships are an essential part of the academic experience, providing students with development opportunities in film production and film studies. Students have found internships and careers with companies such as 3 Arts Entertainment, Netflix, and YouTube, and have worked on productions like Captain America: The Winter Soldier and "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert."
Honors and Scholars Programs
Honors versions of several film studies courses are available, and qualified students may complete a senior Honors thesis. Students majoring in Film Studies may also apply to the Humanities Scholars or Arts Scholars programs, which provide opportunities for specialized workshops, programming, mentoring, and advising.
Research Opportunities
Students are encouraged to participate in research, which is a rich part of the Film Studies culture. The program includes students, faculty, and a 2018 Rhodes Scholar.
