Music Performance (Orchestral Instruments) Program

The Music Performance (Orchestral Instruments) program at Ohio State University is a degree program focused on the mastery of performance skills.

Program Overview

Ohio State offers three tracks within the Bachelor of Music in music performance: orchestral instruments, piano, and voice. Guided by faculty with active performance careers, orchestral instrument students pursue rigorous study of technique, performance practice, pedagogy, and repertoire development. These students also perform in both the schools large performing ensembles and in numerous small chamber ensembles.

Study Abroad

The Office of International Affairs offers more than 100 study abroad programs in 40 different countries. Students have the opportunity to take classes through an exchange program or foreign university, complete an independent study or service-learning project, conduct research, or participate in an internship program.

Internship

Students are encouraged to find educational, performance, and administrative internship opportunities with local arts organizations such as the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts, Opera Columbus, and ProMusica Chamber Orchestra.

Honors and Scholars

The Arts Honors Program is open to students pursuing majors in the arts in the College of Arts and Sciences. The purpose of the Arts Honors Program is to provide opportunities for students with exceptional capabilities and motivation to achieve personal satisfaction and intellectual growth through honors courses, advanced coursework, and special academic enrichment programs.

Student Organizations

Music students may be interested in organizations offered through the Office of Student Life, such as the Jazz Club, Music Industry Club, and Music Producers Club; ensembles such as Mens Glee Club and Womens Glee Club; music fraternities such as Sigma Alpha Iota and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia; and local and national professional organizations.

Possible Careers

Students in music performance have a variety of career opportunities. Those interested in pursuing a professional career as a performer often continue directly into graduate study upon completion of the undergraduate degree. The same is true of students interested in securing a position as an applied music professor at a college or university. In addition, some music performance majors continue into graduate school in another music field, such as conducting, music history, or music theory. Others take professional auditions, participate in performance competitions, or establish private studios for giving music lessons and perform as opportunities arise. Some graduates move into business and industry or other music-related careers, such as arts management.

Program Objectives

Students majoring in music performance will achieve the following learning outcomes:

• Demonstrate achievement of professional, entry-level competence in the area of specialization, including significant technical mastery, capability to produce work and solve professional problems independently, and a coherent set of artistic/intellectual goals that are evident in their work.
• Engage in applied studies each semester that will provide appropriate skills, knowledge, and experience to prepare students for graduate programs and professional careers in the field.
• Complete courses in music theory, music history, and area-specific literature and pedagogy that will provide appropriate skills, knowledge, and experience to prepare them for professional careers in the field.
• Have the ability to communicate musical ideas, concepts, and requirements to professionals and laypersons related to the practice of the major field.
• Gain an understanding of the nature of the music field in the professional world, particularly related to organizational structures, work ethics, technological resources, and entrepreneurial skills required for advancing their careers.
• Gain experiences in general studies sufficient to prepare them for a range of career options.
