Pharmaceutical Sciences

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (BSPS) prepares students for careers in health professions and biomedical research. Students choose between a healthcare professions pathway or a drug discovery and development pathway. The curriculum includes core pharmaceutical sciences courses, as well as coursework in chemistry, biology, and other sciences. Graduates may pursue graduate education, graduate professional education, or health-related careers in the pharmaceutical industry or other fields.

Degree Overview:

• The Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (BSPS) is an undergraduate program that prepares students for careers in various health professions and biomedical research.
• Students select one of two tracks:
• Healthcare professions pathway:
Focuses on clinical careers in pharmacy, medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, and other health care professions.
• Drug discovery and development pathway: Prepares students for graduate school and research-based careers in pharmaceutical sciences.

• Curriculum:
• Includes courses in drug discovery and development, biochemistry, ethics and professionalism, and instrumental analysis.
• Core pharmaceutical sciences courses cover pharmaceutics, pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, and pharmacy practice.
• Students also take coursework in organic and general chemistry, biology, physics, physiology, anatomy, microbiology, and calculus, as well as electives within an area of specialization.

Careers:

• Graduates may pursue graduate education, graduate professional education, or health-related careers.
• Pharmaceutical industry offers opportunities in sales and marketing, drug research and development, quality assurance, and professional services.
• BSPS is a non-licensure undergraduate major intended for preparation for graduate studies or entry-level employment in the pharmaceutical industry.
• To become a licensed pharmacist, graduates must complete the Doctor of Pharmacy program.
