Program Outline
Outline:
Ohio State's Greek and Latin Doctor of Philosophy program provides students with a solid foundation in the relevant languages (Ancient Greek, Latin, or Modern Greek), reading abilities in appropriate modern languages (French, German, Italian), and a thorough grounding in the literatures and histories of their chosen cultures. Beyond these basics, students' paths diverge based on their interests. Faculty members represent a variety of scholarly interests spanning more than two millennia and offer opportunities to study archaeology, art history, Byzantine and medieval studies, critical theory, cultural politics, epigraphy, myth and religion, Near Eastern cultures, palaeography, philosophy, reception theory, and other topics. Candidacy exams are tailored to reflect each student's chosen fields of expertise. For example, students interested in ancient Mediterranean religions can enhance their degree with an Interdisciplinary Graduate Specialization in "Religions of the Ancient Mediterranean," for which they will receive a certificate of completion.
