Introduction to the Latin American Studies Master of Arts Program

The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) at Ohio State, founded in 1962, is a leading promoter of the university's efforts to internationalize the curriculum, foster multidisciplinary initiatives, and increase diversity of perspectives. The Master of Arts in Latin American Studies, developed and administered by CLAS, was first offered in autumn 2010.

About the Program

The Master of Arts in Latin American Studies requires 30 semester credit hours of coursework for graduation. To be considered for admission, students must demonstrate advanced proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese, equal to three years of university instruction or near-native fluency.

Program Structure

The program is designed to be flexible, allowing students to choose two thematic or disciplinary concentrations with the guidance of their faculty advisor. In addition to the courses in their concentrations, students must also take a research methodology course and INTSTDS 5640: Globalization in Latin America. To complete the degree, students may elect to research and write a thesis or take written and oral exams in their areas of concentration.

Dual Degree Option

This degree is designed to easily fit into existing graduate curriculum, allowing students to add the MA in Latin American Studies to an existing graduate program as a dual degree.
