Program Overview
University Preparation Program
The University Preparation Program is a one-year, full-time program designed to equip students with essential skills for undergraduate study. Upon successful completion, students can apply for a degree at UNSW or other universities.
Overview
The program is designed for high school leavers with an ATAR of 50 or above who have experienced educational disadvantage, as well as people aged 20 and over who are looking to return to education without an ATAR. Students will study specially-designed introduction university courses and discipline-specific courses in a supportive environment.

- No tuition fees: The program is fully funded by the Australian Government.
- Choose from four streams: Arts, Design, Architecture & Criminology (ADAC), Science, Business, and Engineering.
- Access flexible study options: Students can study full-time or part-time, with accommodation options available.
Program Structure
The program is delivered over three terms, with four streams to choose from:
- Arts, Design, Architecture & Criminology (ADAC)
- Science
- Business
- Engineering Each stream contains six courses, with three 10-week terms. Students will complete courses by attending study sessions in-person, with additional independent study.
Entry Requirements
To be considered for admission, students must fulfill one of the following criteria:
- Be aged 17-19 years on 1 March, with a minimum ATAR of 50, and qualify under the UAC Educational Access Scheme (EAS) criteria.
- Be aged 20 years or older, with no ATAR requirement, and be an Australian citizen, New Zealand citizen, or hold a current Australian Permanent Resident visa. Students must also demonstrate English language proficiency if they did not undertake their secondary studies in English.
Future Careers
After completing the program, students can apply for degrees in various areas, including:
- Science: Psychology, biological science, earth and environmental sciences, chemistry, and physics.
- Business: Commerce, marketing, accounting, economics, information systems, and management.
- Engineering: Civil, electrical, mechanical, and other branches of engineering.
- Arts, Design, Architecture & Criminology: History, languages, arts, literature, education, fine arts, architecture, social policy, and criminology.
Exclusions
The University Preparation Program is not accepted as a basis for admission to certain UNSW programs, including:
- Advanced Mathematics
- Advanced Science
- Combined Law
- Medicine
- Medicinal Chemistry
- Medical Science
- Optometry
- Philosophy, Politics and Economics
Fees & Scholarships
Tuition fees for the program are covered by the Australian Government. However, students will need to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) and the cost of any course materials. Scholarships are available, including the UNSW Pre-Entry & Enabling Grant and the UNSW Advantage Award.
