Program Outline

Degree Overview:

This degree is designed for graduates who seek to deepen their understanding and practical skills in both research-for-design and research-by-design as a means of shaping the future of the design profession. Design challenges are becoming increasingly complex, necessitating a shift in the profile and role of designers. Research for design and research through design experiments are becoming integral to modern design practice. This program challenges students to develop a comprehensive understanding of these concepts and their implications for practicing designers. It equips them with the insights and hands-on skills to conduct various types of research that are crucial in contemporary design practice.

Outline:

The program requires the preparation of a thesis deemed by examiners to be a distinct contribution to design knowledge. The format and length of the written dissertation are determined after consultation with UTS: Design, Architecture and Building staff and must be approved by the Graduate Studies Committee. Candidates may be required to undertake coursework subjects in research methodology to gain experience with research methods and skills. They are also expected to present papers at UTS: Design, Architecture and Building postgraduate seminars as part of their thesis preparation.

Careers:

Graduates are the new generation of academically trained designers who have a deep understanding of future design trends. They can offer employers a combination of design and research skills essential for long-term success. This degree also provides a clear path for individuals seeking more research-focused careers in industry or academia.
