Program Overview


Chemical Engineering

Improve existing products and processes; learn to develop, design and operate chemical systems; and consider a career in chemical manufacturing, petroleum refining, environmental remediation and more.


Chemical Engineering B.S. in Chemical Engineering

Students in the Chemical Engineering major are constantly engaged in hands-on lab opportunities to explore the mechanics of chemical synthesis that are at the core of their profession. Whether its studying biofilms with a professor at the top of their field or earning a spot alongside students from across the country in the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) summer program, Chemical Engineering students are afforded a variety of opportunities to develop skills that will serve them in positions in chemical manufacturing and petroleum refining, pharmaceutical manufacturing and delivery, environmental engineering and more.


Research Opportunities

Students in the Chemical Engineering department at Montana State are able to experience life-changing research opportunities while still in undergrad, such as researching solutions for developing low-cost, easy-to-use tools for diagnosing diseases such as malaria. Montana State is the top producer in the Northwest of recipients of the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship for students in math, science and engineering.


Center for Biofilm Engineering

Montana States Center for Biofilm Engineering has been a world leader in microbial biofilm research since it was established in 1990 as a National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center.


Innovating for the Community

Chemical engineering students are partnering with their electrical engineering peers and a local nonprofit to design solar-powered bus stops for the local Streamline service in order to provide light, shelter and heat through the seasons.
