University of Toledo Mathematics Graduate Programs

The University of Toledo offers two graduate degree programs in Mathematics: Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Master of Science (M.S.).


Master of Science (M.S.) in Mathematics

The M.S. in Mathematics prepares students to:


  • Enter a doctoral program in Mathematics or Statistics
  • Pursue a teaching career at the community college or university level
  • Work in industry or other careers

The program offers concentrations in:


  • Statistics: Emphasizes the applications of statistics, with a solid foundation in statistical theory, and includes important elements of training in data science.
  • Applied Mathematics: Provides a strong foundation in fundamental areas of pure and applied mathematics, with interactions with faculty in research, seminars, and/or writing a master's thesis.
  • Pure Mathematics: Prepares students for Ph.D. work at major institutions, with a focus on real-world consulting and theory, as well as applications.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Mathematics

The Ph.D. in Mathematics prepares students to:


  • Enter a career in research and teaching in academia
  • Join a medical or biopharmaceutical research facility
  • Work for a government agency, such as the U.S. Census Bureau or the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics
  • Enter high-level careers that require advanced mathematical knowledge in industry, finance, and technology

The program offers concentrations in:


  • Mathematics: A wide variety of basic courses and a chance to focus on your area of interest while pursuing research at the next level in pure and applied mathematics, with dissertation research supervised by world-class experts.
  • Statistics: Strong connections to world-class researchers in the College of Medicine and Life Sciences, with students applying their dissertation-based statistical methods to real-world scientific problems.
  • Applied Mathematics for Natural Sciences: Provides a strong foundation in applied mathematics, with interactions with faculty in research, seminars, and/or writing a dissertation.
