Laboratory Eyecare Technician, Technical Certificate
Program Overview
This 48-credit program provides a comprehensive foundation in vision care, covering topics such as anatomy and physiology of the eye, physical and geometric optics, ophthalmic lenses, and contact lens theory. Through a combination of classroom instruction and clinical experiences, students develop the skills necessary to work as Eye Care Technicians.

- This course is an introduction to the anatomy and physiology of the eye. Topics covered include the structure and function of the eye, the visual system, and common eye diseases.
- PHYSICAL AND GEOMETRIC OPTICS (OPT1110)
- This course is an introduction to the principles of physical and geometric optics. Topics covered include the nature of light, the laws of reflection and refraction, and the design and analysis of optical systems.
- PHYSICAL AND GEOMETRIC OPTICS LAB (OPT1110L)
- This course is a laboratory course that complements the OPT1110 Physical and Geometric Optics lecture course. Students will conduct experiments to investigate the principles of physical and geometric optics.
- ORIENTATION TO VISION CARE (OPT1330)
- This course provides an overview of the field of vision care. Topics covered include the history of vision care, the different types of vision care professionals, and the different aspects of vision care practice.
- OPHTHALMIC LENSES (OPT1150)
- This course is an introduction to the principles of ophthalmic lenses. Topics covered include the types of ophthalmic lenses, the design and fabrication of ophthalmic lenses, and the fitting and dispensing of ophthalmic lenses.
- OPHTHALMIC LENSES LAB (OPT1150L)
- This course is a laboratory course that complements the OPT1150 Ophthalmic Lenses lecture course. Students will fabricate and dispense ophthalmic lenses.
- ORIENTATION TO VISION CARE CLINIC (OPT2090)
- This course provides an overview of the vision care clinic. Topics covered include the different types of vision care clinics, the different aspects of vision care clinic operation, and the different roles of the vision care team.
- REFRACTOMETRY (OPT2375)
- This course is an introduction to the principles of refractometry. Topics covered include the use of the autorefractor and the phoropter, the techniques of retinoscopy, and the interpretation of refractive data.
- REFRACTOMETRY LAB (OPT2879)
- This course is a laboratory course that complements the OPT2375 Refractometry lecture course. Students will perform refractometry procedures on patients.
- CONTACT LENS THEORY (OPT2500)
- This course is an introduction to the principles of contact lens theory. Topics covered include the different types of contact lenses, the fitting and dispensing of contact lenses, and the care and maintenance of contact lenses.
- CONTACT LENS THEORY LAB (OPT2500L)
- This course is a laboratory course that complements the OPT2500 Contact Lens Theory lecture course. Students will fit and dispense contact lenses on patients.
- VISION CARE CLINIC I (OPT2800L)
- This course is a clinical course that provides students with the opportunity to apply the skills they have learned in the classroom to a real-world setting. Students will work under the supervision of a licensed vision care professional to provide vision care services to patients.
- CONTACT LENS CLINIC I (OPT2830L)
- This course is a clinical course that provides students with the opportunity to apply the skills they have learned in the classroom to a real-world setting. Students will work under the supervision of a licensed vision care professional to provide contact lens services to patients.
