Art, Associate of Arts (AA): Emphasis in Art Studio

Overview

The Art, Associate of Arts (AA): Emphasis in Art Studio program at Santa Barbara City College provides students with an outstanding opportunity to prepare themselves for a career in art under the guidance of professional artists who exhibit on a national and international basis. The department has planned an art curriculum to prepare students in their primary field of interest, plus a range of disciplines and fundamentals important to artistic development.

Requirements

• Complete all Department Requirements listed below with a “C” or better or “P” in each course (at least 20% of the department requirements must be completed through SBCC).
• One of the following three General Education options:
  • OPTION 1: A minimum of 18 units of SBCC General Education Requirements (Areas A-D) and Institutional Requirements (Area E) and Information Competency Requirement (Area F)
  • OPTION 2: IGETC Pattern
  • OPTION 3: CSU GE Breadth Pattern
• A total of 60 degree-applicable units (SBCC courses numbered 100 and higher).
• Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better in all units attempted at SBCC.
• Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better in all college units attempted.
• A minimum of 12 units through SBCC.

• Demonstrate proficiency in understanding and/or use of tools and techniques of making visual art.

• Fall Semester:
  • ART 103 or ART 103H: History of Art, Prehistoric to Gothic or History of Art, Prehistoric to Gothic, Honors (3 units)
  • ART 120: Fundamentals Of Drawing (3 units)
  • ART 140 or ART 141: Studio Art Foundations (2-D) or Studio Art Foundations 3D (3 units)
  • Total Units: 9
• Spring Semester:
  • ART 104 or ART 104H: History of Art, Renaissance to Modern or History Of Art, Renaissance To Modern, Honors (3 units)
  • Select one course from the following: (3 units)
    • ART 122: Advanced Drawing
    • ART 140: Studio Art Foundations (2-D)
    • ART 141: Studio Art Foundations 3D
  • Total Units: 6

Second Year

• Fall Semester:
  • ART 102A: Early Twentieth Century Art, (3 units)
  • Select one course from the following: (3-3.3 units)
    • ART 130: Integrated Drawing and Painting
    • ART 190: Introduction to Printmaking
    • ART 150 or ART 170: Fundamentals of Ceramics or Introduction to Sculpture
  • Total Units: 9-9.30
• Spring Semester:
  • ART 102B: Late Twentieth Century Art (Third semester) (3 units)
  • Select one course from the following: (3-3.3 units)
    • ART 130: Integrated Drawing and Painting
    • ART 190: Introduction to Printmaking
