Overview
This certificate offers a fast-track introduction to the American news media and the expanding opportunities in web publication. Students immediately become media practitioners as they develop work for The Channels, SBCC’s award-winning college news publication.
Requirements
Complete all Department Requirements for the Certificate of Achievement with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or better. Candidates for a Certificate of Achievement are required to complete at least 20% of the department requirements through SBCC.

Learning Outcomes
- Use news judgment to select, report, develop and publish journalism projects.

This certificate program provides an accelerated introduction to the American news media and the growing opportunities in web publishing. Students engage in hands-on media practice by contributing to The Channels, SBCC's award-winning college news publication.
Objectives:
- Introduce students to the fundamentals of journalism and web publishing.
- Develop students' skills in reporting, writing, photography, videography, and web publishing.

Program Description:
The program consists of 19 units of coursework, including:
- Reporting/Writing I (JOUR 101): Introduces students to the principles of news reporting and writing, including interviewing, research, and structure.
- The Channels: Reporting/Writing (JOUR 121): Provides students with practical experience in reporting and writing for the college newspaper, The Channels.
- Photojournalism (JOUR/PHOT 190): Introduces students to the principles of photojournalism, including camera operation, composition, and editing.
- The Channels: Newswriting and Editing (JOUR 122A): Focuses on advanced newswriting and editing techniques, including headline writing, copyediting, and page design.
- Public Relations (JOUR/MKT 135): Introduces students to the principles and practices of public relations, including media relations, social media management, and event planning.
