Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The Master of Arts in Musicology offers students the chance to study music theory, history, and criticism in-depth. It is beneficial for those wanting to supplement their undergraduate degrees in performance and/or music education with more in-depth academic work. The Department of Music has a long history of excellence in music historical study and performance. Many graduates have gone on to pursue Ph.D.s and D.M.A.s in music. Students may also pursue advanced study in an instrument or voice while pursuing the M.A. in Musicology, provided they are qualified and accepted by an instructor following a successful audition. The National Association of Schools of Music has given final approval to this degree program.

Outline:

To finish the degree, students must complete a 30-credit research project of a substantial nature on a topic of their choosing. A lecture-recital and written essay will be offered as an alternative for some students. In addition to the aforementioned, students specializing in performance are strongly encouraged to provide public recitals. Students' capacity for critical thinking in music literature and their capacity to describe their advanced independent work are assessed throughout the final oral examination. All Music Master of Arts programs require 30 credit hours plus a final project to finish. Course List:
