Program Overview
The EMT-Basic certificate program provides 150 hours of training to equip students with the skills to work as part of a healthcare team in emergency situations. The program includes didactic, laboratory, and clinical instruction, and aligns with national standards. Upon completion, graduates are eligible for EMT certification in Ohio, opening up career opportunities in private ambulance companies or volunteer organizations.
Program Outline
Outline:
- Program Content: The EMT-Basic certificate program equips students with the skills necessary to work as part of the healthcare team in emergency situations, providing care to emergency patients in an out-of-hospital setting.
- Program Structure: The program comprises 150 contact hours of didactic and laboratory instruction, with a minimum of 10 clinical hours involving patient assessments.
- Course Schedule: Classes are held two days a week (Tuesdays and Fridays) from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Additionally, students must complete an online Anatomy & Physiology Prehospital Provider course.
- Individual Modules: The program curriculum is designed to align with the standards established by the U.S. Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration National Standard Curriculum, and CoAEMSP under the auspices of CAAHEP. The courses include:
- CED ES01: Pre-Hospital Provider Anatomy and Physiology
- CED ES10: Introduction to Basic Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine
- CED ES20: Basic Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine Clinical Practicum
Assessment:
- Assessment Methods: Students are evaluated through a combination of lecture and laboratory assessments, clinical performance evaluations, and a final exam.
- Assessment Criteria: To receive a certificate of program completion, students must attain a minimum grade of 76% in both the lecture and laboratory components of the course (CED ES10) and successfully complete the required skills in the clinical portion of the program (CED ES20). Failure to meet these requirements or receiving a cumulative grade lower than a "C" will result in program failure and ineligibility for a certificate of completion.
Careers:
- Potential Career Paths: Upon program completion, graduates are prepared for entry into professional practice as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) in the State of Ohio. EMT certification is often used as a stepping stone to higher-paying positions in the healthcare field, such as paramedics.
- Career Opportunities: Employment opportunities for EMTs exist with private ambulance companies or as volunteers in various municipalities. EMTs are also required to replace advancing EMTs and those leaving the profession.
