Graduate Certificate of Diabetes Education
Overview
Enhance your existing health qualifications and provide effective self-management education to people with or at risk of diabetes. Deliver diabetes-oriented services and engage with high-risk communities. Gain real-world experience with clinical placements that equip you to work in rural and remote communities. Upon graduating, you’ll be eligible to gain accreditation with the Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA).

- Entry Requirements: This is usually a score given to Year 12 students upon completion of their studies. Non-school leavers can have their qualifications and work experience assessed to obtain an equivalent score. The score displayed is the minimum adjusted ATAR/rank that was required for entry. Some subjects are required for entry into a course. Whereas assumed knowledge indicates a minimum level of knowledge
- AQF Level 7 bachelor degree or equivalent in clinical-based health, allied health or relevant field; and at least 12 months post-graduation experience in that field (AHPRA-Registered Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners require a minimum of a certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice)

Build on your existing health and medicine qualifications and advance your skills for a variety of settings. JCU’s Graduate Certificate of Diabetes Education equips appropriately qualified nurses and allied health professionals with a greater capacity to provide diabetes-oriented services to patients.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently reported that diabetes was the 9th leading cause of death and was on the increase. You can contribute to education for those with diabetes and those that are at risk of the consequences of diabetes. As a university for the Tropics based in North Queensland, JCU is uniquely positioned to equip you for working in rural, regional and metropolitan areas, enabling you to make a difference through providing diabetes services in any community.
This diabetes education degree has a strong focus on the clinical issues faced by Diabetes Educators practicing in rural and remote communities. As you complete this 8-month (part-time) course, you will gain skills in cultural competency and appropriateness when providing diabetes care to Australia’s First Nations people, a demographic with increasing numbers of diabetes diagnoses.
The Graduate Certificate of Diabetes Education has four core subjects: Health Education and Self-Management; Foundations of Clinical Diabetes; Applied Clinical Diabetes Education; and Diabetes Education Professional Practice. You will have opportunities to apply and advance your knowledge during clinical placement alongside leading industry professionals.
As a graduate of the Graduate Certificate of Diabetes Education you’ll be eligible to gain accreditation with the Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA). How to Apply

You are eligible for the course if you have:
- Completed of an AQF Level 7 Bachelor Degree (or qualifications recognised by the Division as equivalent) in a relevant clinical based health, allied health or other relevant field, and
- At least 12 months experience working in your chosen field since undergraduate course completion.
Graduate Certificate of Diabetes Education applicants must also complete and upload the following forms and documentary evidence with their application:
