About Program

Program Overview

This tertiary preparation program provides foundational skills in critical thinking, study techniques, and technology. It also offers advanced mathematics and physics modules to prepare students for further studies in engineering. Upon completion, students can pursue various engineering careers, including civil, electrical, mechanical, and software engineering.

Program Outline

Outline:

Tertiary Preparation

All students are required to complete the tertiary preparation modules:

  • Mathematics for Study (MMS001) in their first trimester
  • Language for Study (LGS001) in their second trimester

Modules

  • Academic Research and Critical Enquiry:
  • Introduces basic principles of critical thinking, skills for the tertiary study environment, and academic reading, listening, notetaking, and referencing.
  • Essential Study Skills:
  • Provides understanding and application of essential study skills, including independent learning skills and styles, active listening, presentation, and group work skills.
  • Information and New Media Technologies:
  • Introduces use of the Internet, social media, and associated technologies in society and business. Utilizes Microsoft Office and online tools for effective communication and discusses ethical and security issues related to the use of Information Communication Technologies.
  • Communication, People, Place, and Culture:
  • Introduces basic principles of communication and its role in society and culture. Investigates the effects of different forms of verbal and non-verbal communication and describes cultural influences on the communication process.
  • Advanced Mathematics 1:
  • Provides understanding of calculus required for further studies. Uses algebra to solve mathematical problems involving functions and trigonometry and gives an introduction to differential calculus.
  • Advanced Mathematics 2:
  • Further develops capabilities in calculus to prepare for the level of mathematics required in Engineering. Builds on existing algebra knowledge to solve mathematical problems including trigonometric, exponential, and logarithmic equations.
  • Physics 1:
  • Introduces basic concepts of Physics, with a particular focus on motion and heat. Teaches appropriate equations and units for demonstrating different concepts and conducting experiments to analyze and test theories.
  • Physics 2:
  • Further develops skills in using the basic concepts of Physics to the level required for the study of engineering focusing on waves, optics, electricity and atomic physics. Continues to develop analytical skills, using appropriate diagrams as a form of communicating and discussing discrepancies in results.

Careers:

Depending on the chosen UniSA specialization, career options can include:

  • Civil engineer
  • Construction / project manager
  • Project engineer
  • Electrical engineer
  • Commissioning engineer
  • Mechatronic development engineer
  • Mechanical engineer
  • Industrial engineer
  • Automation engineer
