Overview

Nova Southeastern University's Master of Science in Dentistry (MSCDM) is a postdoctoral program that combines advanced clinical specialty training with a rigorous, mentor-guided research experience. Designed for dentists in postdoctoral residencies, the program deepens scientific knowledge and builds the skills to design, conduct, and communicate original research. Graduates emerge as clinician-scholars prepared to lead in patient care, academia, and innovation.

Program Details

The MSCDM is offered in conjunction with NSU's clinical specialty residencies, allowing students to complete the master's degree and their specialty certification at the same time. In Orthodontics, the M.S. is a required component of the residency. In other specialties, such as Endodontics, Periodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Advanced Education in General Dentistry, participation is optional but strongly encouraged for those seeking an academic or research edge.

Research Experience

Every MSCDM student completes an original thesis under the guidance of a faculty mentor and a small committee. From refining the research question to navigating approvals, collecting and analyzing data, and presenting a public defense, the process is intentionally supported and paced. Students can share results at scientific meetings or submit manuscripts for publication, contributing new knowledge to the field while building a strong academic portfolio.

Program Duration

The MSCDM is typically completed in three years alongside your NSU clinical residency; timelines vary by specialty and research plan. With continuous enrollment, thesis work may extend up to two additional years (five years total).

Graduates leave the program with a specialty certificate and a Master of Science degree, ready to innovate in university settings, specialty practice, public health, or industry.
