The Physical Education major provides a foundation for careers in teaching, coaching, athletic training, exercise science/fitness, athletic and sports management. Program Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this program, students will demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:

  • ADAPTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION (ADAP):
  • Enhanced muscular strength and endurance, or maintenance or slowed degradation of these qualities in the presence of degenerative diseases.
  • COMBATIVES:
  • Improved fitness levels as measured by the Physical Education Evaluation Program (PEEP), fundamental skills, knowledge, etiquette, and vocabulary in combative activities, and the importance of regular moderate physical activity.
  • DANCE:
  • Authentic and personalized interpretation of dance forms with appropriate technique and cultural elements, creation and organization of original movement sequences, and critical analysis of dance as a performance art.
  • FITNESS:
  • Improved fitness levels as measured by PEEP, recognition and practice of regular moderate physical activity, identification and modification of wellness or fitness practices to enhance body composition, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, muscular endurance, and muscular strength.
  • INDIVIDUAL SPORTS:
  • Improved fitness levels as measured by PEEP, identification and modification of wellness or fitness practices to enhance performance-related body composition, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, muscular endurance, and muscular strength, and recognition of the importance of regular moderate physical activity.
  • PHYSICAL EDUCATION/KINESIOLOGY:
  • Identification of risk factors for heart disease and stroke, application of general fitness and wellness principles to minimize risks, critical analysis of anatomical and physiological factors in exercise prescription and rehabilitation programs, identification of career and educational options in physical education, and development of a plan for pursuing these options, understanding of historical, social, and psychological aspects of activity and sport in society.
  • TEAM SPORTS:
  • Improved fitness levels as measured by PEEP, fundamental skills, knowledge, etiquette, and vocabulary in team activities, development and evaluation of offensive and defensive strategies, and application of concepts in practice.
  • VARSITY SPORTS:
  • Expert knowledge of sports strategies and skills, critical thinking skills to apply this knowledge in competitive situations, embodiment of good sportsmanship and teamwork, and commitment to academic achievement through the discipline developed in practice and competition.
