Electives (15 credit hours)

  • Courses taken in any engineering program, mathematics, and/or any science discipline.

Additional Requirements:

  • Preliminary Examination:
  • EML 8968 Preliminary Doctoral Examination, passed by the end of 2nd semester.
  • Prospectus Defense:
  • Presentation of proposed dissertation topic within one year of candidacy status.
  • Dissertation Defense:
  • Oral defense of original research dissertation, demonstrating competency in mechanical engineering research.

Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements:

  • MS degree in Mechanical Engineering or any one of the following related fields: any Engineering Major, Chemistry, Computer Science, Material Science, Mathematics/Applied Mathematics or Physics/Applied Physics.
  • Non-majors students without a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering may be required to take up to twelve credit hours of remedial coursework in Mechanical Engineering as a condition of admission.
  • Applicants must have at least a 3.0 upper-division GPA
  • a GRE Verbal score of at least 150, and a GRE Quantitative score of at least 155 (or a minimum combined GRE General Test score of 1150).
  • International students must take the TOEFL Exam and score at least 550 on the paper-based exam, 213 on the computer-based exam, or 80 on the Internet-based exam.
