About Program

Program Overview

The Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at UNLV offers advanced study in various areas, including communications, computer engineering, and power systems. Students can enter through the Conventional Option (requiring an M.S.) or the Direct Ph.D. Option (for exceptional undergraduates). The program prepares graduates for research careers in electrical engineering or teaching positions in the field.

  • The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UNLV offers a program leading to the Ph.D. degree in Engineering in the Field of Electrical Engineering.
  • Specific major areas of study currently available include: Communications, Computer Engineering, Control System Theory, Electromagnetics and Optics, Electronics, Power Systems, Signal Processing, and Solid State Materials and Devices.
  • One may be admitted to the Ph.D. program by one of two mechanisms.
  • The Conventional Option requires the student to complete a M.S. Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering. The Direct Ph.D. Option allows those undergraduates with outstanding undergraduate backgrounds to enter the Ph.D. program without having to complete a M.S. Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
  • All requirements leading to a Ph.D. are still required beyond the B.S.
  • Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering excluding the completion of a Master thesis.

Careers:

  • A Ph.D. in electrical engineering specifically prepares graduates for a research career in the electrical engineering field.
  • Most students who purse a Ph.D. in electrical engineering have a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree and a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in electrical engineering. Obtaining a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering allows graduates to specialize in particular electrical engineering disciplines and engage in research in one or more of these disciplines. A Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering can also help graduates establish a career in teaching electrical engineering.
