Introduction to Advanced Diploma of Engineering (Aeronautical)
The Advanced Diploma of Engineering (Aeronautical) is a vocational program designed to provide students with the advanced technical and managerial skills needed for technicians and engineers working in aerospace manufacturing, design, and maintenance at a paraprofessional level.
Program Overview
This advanced diploma equips students to work in small to large enterprises, as well as the defence forces. The program focuses on developing skills in areas such as aircraft design and layout, mechanical fault diagnosis of airframe and engine systems, and structures, including producing, maintaining, and repairing sheet metal, bonded and non-metallic composite materials, and components on aircraft.

Learning and Teaching
RMIT offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches, including lectures, seminars, studios, workshops, presentations, group discussions, and syndicate work. Students have access to online resources through the student portal. Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes examinations, essays, reports, oral classes, presentations, group projects, research projects, laboratory projects, and practical assignments.
RMIT Capabilities
The program incorporates six future-focused RMIT Capabilities: Ethical, Global Citizens, Connected, Adaptive, Digitally Adept, Expert, and Critically Engaged. These capabilities are built into the course and inform the design and delivery of learning activities and assessments.
Industry Connections
The advanced diploma has a strong Industry Advisory Committee (IAC), which links the program to real-life industry developments. Students also complete a simulated industry-based project (or equivalent) as part of their studies.
Learning Outcomes
This course is competency-based and designed to help students develop the practical skills and knowledge necessary to work effectively in their chosen field. Students learn and are assessed by practicing and demonstrating their capabilities, all of which can be readily applied in the workplace.
Electives and Course Plan
The course develops students' skills and knowledge of aerospace engineering, including aerodynamics and stability analysis, aircraft system fault diagnosis, and skills in aerospace mechanisms and power transmission devices.
Career
Graduates will be eligible for work in a wide range of roles, including production supervisor/planner, maintenance supervisor/planner, technical R&D officer, systems technician, design supervisor, and quality supervisor.
Professional Recognition and Accreditation
This program is fully accredited by Engineers Australia. Graduates of the program will be eligible for graduate membership of Engineers Australia at Engineering Associate level.
Entry Requirements and Admissions
- Academic Requirements: Successful completion of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) (or equivalent), or successful completion of post-secondary studies in a related field (Certificate II or above), or at least 6 months of full-time work experience in a related field.
- Prerequisites: There are no prerequisite subjects required for entry into this qualification.
- Selection Tasks: A selection task is not required for entry into this qualification.
- English Language Requirements: To study this program, students must complete one of the following English proficiency tests: IELTS (Academic), TOEFL (Internet-Based Test), Pearson Test of English (Academic), or C1 Advanced.
Pathways and Further Study
A pathway is an alternative way to get into a course. RMIT's pathways can help students move through different levels of study to reach the qualification they're aiming for. Graduates of this course will be guaranteed entry into the Bachelor of Engineering (Aerospace Engineering) (Honours) and will receive three semesters of advanced standing.
Fees
- Tuition Fees 2026: AU$23,000 (annual).
- Total Indicative Tuition Fee for 2026 Commencement: AU$47,000.
- Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF): AU$373 (maximum fee for 2026).
- Other Costs: In addition to tuition fees, students need to pay for the SSAF, Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), and account for living expenses.
