About Program

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Professional Communication at RMIT University equips students with research, communication, and critical thinking skills through assignments, projects, and in-class activities. Delivered primarily face-to-face, the program fosters independent learning and prepares graduates for careers in advertising, digital communication, and public relations, as well as emerging roles in these fields. Students also have the option to pursue further study or research.

Program Outline

Assessment:

Your assessment will typically come in the form of assignments and projects. These may be either research or problem based, and will provide you with experience in effectively researching, creating and presenting your ideas and research for a range of audiences. Your assignments will help develop your skills in communication and critical thinking and will offer you the opportunity to receive feedback on your learning and skills development. You may also be assessed through presentation and in-class activities.

Teaching:

Taught predominantly face-to-face at our Melbourne city campus, the Bachelor of Professional Communication is designed to foster your development as an independent learner so that you will be able to extend your capabilities once you graduate. Courses are delivered via lectorials, seminars, tutorials, workshops, practical sessions, site visits, and through the provision of interactive online materials and activities or work placement. You may work independently or in a team to conduct research, solve problems, analyse and respond to case studies, create communication content, write original research or case study reports, or participate in preparing, responding to or managing a live brief for an industry partner or client. Courses in this degree use a combination of face-to-face, online, and self-directed learning. Course materials such as learning activities, learning resources and assessment details are provided through RMIT's Learning Management System; Canvas. The types of classes you have will depend on the course you’re studying. Classes are offered in various formats designed to provide meaningful engagement with staff, industry and peers and provide for access and use of spaces where learning can be applied and active, including an array of specialised equipment. Most RMIT courses do not include passive large-scale classes such as lectures, instead the content traditionally provided in lectures is made available online. This may be in the form of readings, videos or other on-demand learning materials. This content will also support the basis of interactive learning that takes place in on-campus classes.

Careers:

As a graduate of the Bachelor of Professional Communication you can expect to work as an advertising creative or strategist; as a digital communication coordinator or content and digital manager; as a public relations consultant or media adviser. You will also be prepared for a transformative role in the diverse and growing field of professional communication. New jobs in Advertising, Digital Communication and Public Relations are emerging as the result of disruptions and megatrends in the field of professional communication. These roles have formed due to the high demand for specialised knowledge in areas including social media, web analytics, community engagement, risk and crisis management, artificial intelligence (AI) and automation. Alternatively, you may choose to pursue further study or research.
