Module Descriptions:


Intro to Broadcast Media:

Introduces students to the broadcast industry, terminology, and career opportunities, including radio DJing. Students gain comfort in the radio studio and participate in a live-to-tape video shoot.


Broadcast Announcing:

Focuses on performance techniques, including breathing, vocal, and acting strategies, and developing a professional speaking voice. Students complete hands-on projects, delivering commercials, news, weather, sports, and other on-air features.


Broadcast Copywriting:

Teaches students to write 30 and 60-second commercials for radio and television. Covers hard sell and soft sell approaches to writing, and students develop a portfolio of their scripts.


Audio Production:

Provides students with skills in recorded and live production. Focuses on digital audio editing, including special effects, studio console operation, and digital and analog field production (Audacity).


Video Production:

Introduces students to television production in the studio and on location. Covers basic principles such as camera operation and composition, lighting, sound recording, linear and non-linear editing (DaVinci Resolve).


Media Production Specialization:

Allows students to major in either audio or video production based on personal preference. Offers an intensive look at field and studio production, advanced techniques, and numerous hands-on projects.


Broadcast Journalism:

Teaches students professional writing, reporting, and interview techniques. Covers Canadian broadcast journalism, including law and ethics, using a Canadian textbook and locally sourced resources. Includes units on sports, interviews, and weather.


Reporting and Current Affairs:

Develops students' research strategies for writing and producing documentaries, investigative and consumer reports. Covers Municipal, Provincial, federal, and U.S. politics.


Broadcast Sales and Marketing:

Reviews the fundamentals of generating advertising revenue. Teaches students to approach potential clients, make sales pitches, and develop well-thought-out marketing strategies. Introduces the promotions department and on-air contesting.


Communication Skills:

Provides an intensive review of grammar based on the needs of the broadcast industry.


Media Projects:

Allows students to apply their acquired skills to projects in their chosen specialization areas, with the goal of developing demos for their portfolios.


Writing for Online Media:

Teaches students the differences between conventional writing, writing for advertising, and specific writing styles for social media messaging. Emphasizes quick, concise, and accurate writing. Covers different social media platforms and their unique features and constraints.


Creative Writing:

Develops students' storytelling skills and knowledge of writing styles. Covers writing short stories, character development, plot structure and conflict, setting, atmosphere, and narrative voice.


Podcasting:

Teaches students about developing and recording for online delivery in podcast format. Covers concept development, podcast goals, writing the first episode, uploading, responding to audiences, finding fresh content, and promoting/marketing the podcast.


Public Relations:

Provides students with the opportunity to learn about managing the exchange of information between an organization and the general public. Covers developing media relations strategies, evaluating public opinion, responding to crises and opportunities, and ensuring consistent communications across channels.


Career Development:

Teaches students to develop professional resumes, cover letters, and interview skills.


Internship:

Provides practical application of students' knowledge and skills in a broadcasting environment. Students complete a minimum of 150 hours of work experience over six weeks.
