Program Overview

The Building Energy Modelling and Simulation microcredential equips students with the skills to become professional energy modellers. Through hands-on experience and industry-expert guidance, students learn to perform whole building energy simulations and apply them to various stages of building design, operations, and renovations. The program prepares graduates for careers as Building energy performance consultants (Energy Modelers), addressing industry demand for professionals in this field.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The Building Energy Modelling and Simulation microcredential prepares students to become professional "energy modellers" who can perform whole building energy simulations and apply them to various stages of building design, operations, and renovations within a year.

Objectives:

  • Understand what energy modeling is
  • Obtain model inputs and apply them successfully to present end results
  • Model a building from scratch, run an annual simulation, and analyze the results
  • Perform an energy efficiency and greenhouse (GHG) gas reduction study
  • Present analysis and results to a "client" in a report
  • Represent mechanical, electrical, and control systems in a whole building energy model
  • Simulate the dynamics of the building and systems over a representative year of operations and weather
  • Apply knowledge of whole building energy modelling and simulation to a project at the equivalent level of complexity as a real-world industry project
  • Experience comparable to industry experience, starting with problem definition, methodology, energy modeling and simulation of design options, development of a proposed design, and justification of the recommendation
  • Summarize the project in an industry-style report

Outline:

Course 1: Building Energy Modelling and Simulation Fundamentals

  • Introduction to energy modeling
  • How to obtain model inputs
  • How to build an energy model from scratch
  • How to run an annual simulation and analyze the results
  • How to perform an energy efficiency and greenhouse (GHG) gas reduction study
  • How to present analysis and results to a "client" in a report

Course 2: Advanced Building Performance Simulation

  • How to represent mechanical, electrical, and control systems in a whole building energy model
  • How to simulate the dynamics of the building and systems over a representative year of operations and weather

Course 3: High Performance Building Design - Project Course

  • Students apply the knowledge of whole building energy modeling and simulation they acquired in the instructional courses to a project at the equivalent level of complexity as a real-world industry project
  • Students will be mentored and guided by an industry expert faculty member with current, relevant industry project experience
  • The project course provides learners with experience comparable to industry experience

Assessment:

The minimum passing grade for each course is 50%.

Teaching:

Methods:

Courses are delivered in a synchronous, online format.

Faculty:

Industry expert faculty members with current, relevant industry project experience will provide mentoring and guidance in the project course.

Unique Approaches:

The program provides hands-on experience comparable to industry experience through a project course that involves problem definition, methodology, energy modeling and simulation of design options, development of a proposed design, and justification of the recommendation.

Careers:

This microcredential provides a new learning pathway for individuals seeking careers as Building energy performance consultants (Energy Modelers) in response to industry needs.
