Theory is combined with hands-on activities utilizing Cisco routers and switches, and content includes networking theory, TCP/IP, IP routing, Ethernet switching, basic network security, and WAN concepts. Once earned, you will be ready for a career in current and emerging technologies where there is a high demand for qualified applicants. The program features considerable hands-on activities in well-equipped labs consisting of Cisco routers and switches.

  • Instruction covers the fundamentals of LANs, WANs, routers, router programming, networking, network standards, and terminology.
  • Topics also include the OSI model, cabling, cabling tools, TCP/IP protocol suite, including IP addressing and subnetting.
  • Insights into the architecture, components, and operations of routers, switches, and wireless devices in a small network are provided.
  • Students will learn how to configure a router and a switch for basic functionality.
  • Building upon static routing, this course expands on dynamic routing and router configuration, explores networking protocols, and applies routing concepts within a lab environment.
  • Routing protocols covered include Open Shortest Path First (OSPF).

Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements:

Register today for BCIT Flexible Learning (formerly Part-time Studies) courses. BCIT Flexible Learning courses and programs are taught assuming that registrants not only have a BC Grade 12 level of English, but also have proficiency in all four language skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. BCIT has several upgrading courses for students who wish to improve their English language skills.
