Program Overview
This program provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform breast sonography. Students will learn about normal breast anatomy, variations in tissues, and the sonographic features of benign conditions and common pathologies. They will also gain hands-on experience in breast sonography settings, developing skills in performing more difficult or complex cases.

- XDMS 5002: Breast Sonography Skill-up (2.0 credits)
- Students learn to identify normal breast anatomical structures and variations in tissues due to age, pregnancy, and breast density on ultrasound.
- They also learn the sonographic features of benign conditions and common pathologies.
- Patient care and management strategies are discussed, including targeted vs whole breast ultrasounds, mammograms, MRI, breast biopsies, and the ACR – BI-RADS® reporting system.
- XDMS 5012: Breast Sonography Clinical First-Steps (4.0 credits)
- Students gain entry-level hands-on experience in Breast sonography settings.

Entry Requirements:
- Students are chosen by their employers through a selection process.
- Students must be British Columbia (BC) residents, credentialed, employed, and working for the BC Health Authority or local industry partner.
- A student will need to have graduated from an accredited sonography training program and hold the Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS – AB/OB/GYN) or Canadian Registered Generalist Sonographer (CRGS) credentials to qualify for the BCIT breast sonography specialty training.
- Proof of Sonography Canada or American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography membership is required.
