Year 1: Pre-Medical Sciences

  • Coursework: Includes general education and medical school prerequisite coursework, such as English composition, psychology, sociology, math, computer science, physics, medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, statistics, public health, evidence-based research, biology, physical and organic chemistry.
  • Eligibility: Students are eligible for direct admission into the M.D.
  • program at the end of Semester 4 upon successful completion of all coursework.

Years 2-3: Basic Sciences

  • Coursework: Focuses on basic medical sciences courses in an organ-systems curriculum, including gross and microscopic anatomy, molecular & cell biology, pathological basis of human disease, epidemiology, research, ethics and issues, and principles of clinical care.
  • Clinical Skills: Students participate in volunteer community health experiences during semesters on the island to gain practical experience.
  • USMLE Step 1 Review: Semester 5 includes a professor-led USMLE Step 1 review conducted at the AUIS campus in Atlanta.

Years 4-5: Clinical Sciences

  • Advanced Clinical Medicine Pre-Clerkship: A 4-week program in Atlanta covering clinical procedures and skills certifications using a high-definition medical simulation laboratory.
  • Clinical Clerkships: Students complete 80 weeks of Clinical Clerkships in the US, Canada, and some international hospital locations.
  • Core Clerkships (Year 4): 48 weeks in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Family Medicine, Psychiatry, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Pediatrics.
  • Elective Clerkships (Year 5): 32 weeks in various specialties.
  • Training: Students receive training in clinical skills through preceptor-supervised patient contact in both inpatient and outpatient care settings.
