Program Overview
Introduction to the Psychology Program
The Department of Psychology has approximately 30 faculty members and 60 graduate students. Faculty have active research programs in many areas of psychology, many of which rely on volunteers from the community.
Description of Programs
PsyD Program
The goal of the PsyD program is to train students to become professional clinical psychologists and as such, the program emphasizes acquisition of research knowledge and skills in the solution of applied problems. The curriculum focuses on development of seven competencies:
- relationships
- assessment and diagnosis
- intervention
- research
- consultation
- supervision
- ethics and standards A particular emphasis is placed on issues related to rural practice and multidisciplinary teamwork. In addition to a program of required coursework, successful completion of the PsyD program will also involve fulfilment of the requisite supervised practica experiences, passing a comprehensive examination, producing an independent research thesis, and completing an approved clinical internship.
Minimum Admission Requirements
PsyD Requirements
- A 4-year undergraduate degree in Psychology including an honours thesis (or equivalent with minimum second class standing or roughly a mid-B average)
- Completion of the following undergraduate psychology courses is required:
- abnormal psychology
- cognition
- developmental psychology
- history and systems
- learning theory
- neuroscience
- research design
- social psychology
