This university foundation program provides a comprehensive introduction to art and design techniques, critical thinking, and research skills. Students explore various media and experiment with processes, developing a strong foundation for further study in architecture, interior architecture, landscape architecture, or product and furniture design. Outline:

  • Stage 1: University Foundation (Two or three semesters)

Modules:

  • Creative Workshop: Imaginative and flexible approaches to art and design techniques, assessed through portfolio.
  • Critical Thinking: Introduction to basic fundamentals, assessed by three in-class 1-hour tests, one 2-hour closed-book exam.
  • Extended Media Experimentation: Experimentation with processes and techniques, properties of media, assessed by three pieces of coursework (research report, self-reflective journal, presentation of work).
  • Information Research, Recording and Responding in Art & Design: In-depth research, exploration of recording findings, self-reflection, studio practice, assessed by three pieces of coursework (personal statement of intent, final research journal, final portfolio of art/design/media work, including statements of self-reflection).
  • Interactive Learning Skills and Communication: Time management, public speaking, listening skills, appropriate language and writing techniques, professional communication and presentation, exam techniques, effective audience communication, team and individual work, research/referencing techniques for reasoned academic opinion avoidance of plagiarism, assessed by various methods including research project, individual and group presentations, listening assessment, 2-hour closed-book exam.

(Stage 3 programme only)

  • Interactive Learning Skills and Communication & Preparation and Progression in Art and Design: Speech anxiety management techniques, grammar, critical thinking, logical communication, cross-cultural understanding, planning/producing major art/design project, exhibition preparation, assessed by methods including presentation on project intent/planning, the project itself (40%), exhibition/presentation.
  • Knowledge & Understanding of Creative Practice in Art & Design: Understanding of contemporary/historical contexts in art and design to inform creative practice and pathway choices, assessed by three pieces of coursework (research project on contextual influences in art and design (50%) group presentation, self-reflective log.
  • Mass Communication: Core concepts and principles in mass communications and theories, assessed by three pieces of coursework (analysis of "Fight Club", analysis of advertisement from magazine
    ewspaper, group presentation).
  • Media Experimentation in Art and Design: Wide-range experimentation with traditional and contemporary processes/techniques media, understanding media's potential/limitations, assessed by through experimentation and research logs, experimental work portfolios.
  • Personal Combined Experimental Studies in Art & Design: Exploration and review of skills, materials, health/safety, record keeping, assessed through group problem-solving/research project, experiments/materials selection), individual presentations, and experimentation logs.
  • Stage 2: First-Year Degree
  • Stage 3: Second-Year Degree
