Beginning Medical Transcription

Overview

This is a beginning medical transcription course designed to provide students with a working knowledge of transcription of medical reports. Transcription is taking the spoken word and turning it into a written document. Case studies are provided so that the student will gain knowledge in the transcribing of various medical reports. Medical reports will be transcribed from ten individual case studies, each of which concerns an inpatient with a specific medical problem. There are between four and eight reports within each case study. Students will be involved in the care of the patient from the date of admission through the date of discharge. Students must complete specified prerequisites.

Admission Requirements

You may enroll in a Continuing Education course at Canadore College if you are 19 years of age or older or if you have earned an Ontario Secondary School Diploma/Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent.

We recommend that you use a computer to complete the online registration process as you may encounter an error if using a device such as a phone or tablet.

What You Need

Important prerequisite details:

• MUST HAVE successfully completed: Medical Terminology (LO-HLTH8007), Medical Keyboarding (LA-CSCM4333), Transcription Styles & Practices (LO-HLTH8153), Transcription Fundamentals (LO-HLTH8154), Writing Grammatically (AL-ENL0011) (or Communications 2: CM-ENG1500).
• Typing speed of at least 30 wpm
• Familiarity with a Word Processing package (MS Word, WordPerfect, KeyPro software)
• Good punctuation and grammar skills

Software requirements:

• Windows Operating System
• Must have audio capabilities (speakers or ear phones)
• Transcription playback software will be a free download from the Internet (Traditional equipment will be simulated)
• Students may choose to purchase a foot pedal from the software download site (optional)
• The Word Processing will be MS Word
• Note that MAC users will need to purchase a Microsoft Word compatibility program installed (about $100 at Staples/Future Shop)

Learning Outcomes

Learning outcomes represent culminating demonstrations of learning and achievement. In addition, learning outcomes are interrelated and cannot be viewed in isolation of one another. As such, they should be viewed as a comprehensive whole. They describe performances that demonstrate that significant integrated learning by graduates of the program has been achieved.
