Program Overview

Overview

The undergraduate music history program will challenge you to think critically about music. Course materials explore topics like the place of music in different cultural contexts, the social condition of musicians, the evolution of performing styles, and the different ways music can project meaning and reflect identity.

You will be taught the parameters of different musical styles and given the tools to understand musical syntax. Classes offer exposure to a wide variety of music within the Western classical tradition as well as to jazz and popular idioms.

Your classes will be both theoretical and practical, with the latter focusing on musicianship and training on the keyboard.
