Program Overview

Master's in Industrial and Systems Engineering

Industrial and systems engineers design to make a difference every day. From manufacturing efficiency to workplace safety, students have the chance to look more closely at improving a system or process while earning a master's degree in industrial and systems engineering from the Russ College.

Curriculum

The program offers both a thesis option and a non-thesis option for students pursuing a master's degree in ISE, with the following credit requirements:

• Graduate Credit Course Work:
  • Thesis Option: 24 hours
  • Non-thesis (Project) Option: 29 hours
• ISE 6300: Graduate Seminar: 1 hour (both options)
• ET 6020: Technical Writing Seminar: 1 hour (both options)
• ISE 6950: Thesis: 4 hours (thesis option only)
• ISE 6949: Project: 3 hours (non-thesis option only"
• Total: 30 hours (thesis option), 34 hours (non-thesis option"

Additional Credit Requirements"

In addition to the minimum credit requirements, students in either option must meet the following requirements:"

• Graduate Student-Only Credits: At least seven of the graduate credit hours must be earned from graduate-only courses (6000 or above). Courses ISE 6300, ISE 6940, ISE 6949, ISE 6950, and ET 6020 do not count toward meeting this requirement."
• Dual-Listed Courses: Up to 6 hours of dual-listed courses that are listed with a 4000-level undergraduate required can be counted for graduate credit in the plan of study. Any number of hours of dual-listed courses that are listed with a 4000-level undergraduate elective can be counted for graduate credit in the plan of study. Any course that is dual-listed with a 1000, 2000 or 3000 level cannot be counted for graduate credit in the plan of study."
• Non-ISE Courses: A maximum of eight graduate credit hours may be taken from outside the ISE Department, provided that the courses are listed in the Plan of Study and are approved by the thesis advisor and the ISE Graduate Chair."
• Independent Study: Up to a total of four hours of ISE 6930 (Independent Study, topic subject to prior approval by the thesis advisor) and ISE 5900 (Special Topics, not including reliability, industrial ergonomics, supply chain) may be taken for graduate credit for students in the thesis option. However, this is limited to three hours for students in the non-thesis option."
• Transfer Credit: A maximum of eight credit hours may be transferred from an accredited university and used for the master's degree program if approved by the ISE Graduate Committee and the Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and Technology."
  • Authorization for Transfer of Credit for graduate students must be submitted to the ISE Department and the Russ College of Engineering and Technology."
  • The credits to be transferred must have been designated as graduate credit applicable for an advanced degree and
