Program Overview


This part-time, online program provides students with essential office skills, including keyboarding, computer applications, business communications, and accounting. The nine-month program starts in September and finishes in May, and includes modules on employability skills and a capstone project to extend students' software knowledge. Upon completion, graduates are prepared for entry-level administrative and bookkeeping positions.

Individual Modules with Descriptions:

  • OTEC100 - Online Learner Success: Provides students with a working knowledge of the Moodle online learning platform.
  • OTEC110 - Keyboarding I: Teaches accurate keyboarding at a minimum of 35 net words per minute.
  • OTEC111 - Keyboarding II: Increases keying speed and accuracy to a minimum of 50 net words per minute.
  • OTEC115 - Administrative Computer Applications: Introduces essential computer skills required in any office career.
  • OTEC120 - Business Math and Calculators: Teaches the touch method of calculator use and emphasizes business and personal problem solving.
  • OTEC135 - Business Communications: Teaches how to plan, organize, and write accurate and effective business documents.
  • OTEC150 - Word Processing I: Teaches basic functions of a word processing program and how to format business documents.
  • OTEC153 - Spreadsheets: Provides a working knowledge of electronic spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel.
  • OTEC162 - Employability Skills: Helps students develop successful job search strategies.
  • OTEC170 - Bookkeeping I: Provides an introduction to manual accounting.
  • OTEC171 - Payroll: Introduces payroll procedures and employer responsibilities.
  • OTEC172 - Bookkeeping II: Provides additional knowledge in common accounting systems.

Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements:

In addition to meeting the general entrance requirements for admission to Selkirk College, applicants must meet the following Office Administration and Technology Program requirements: Office Administration and Technology Certificate (Office Assistant and Bookkeeping Concentrations): English Studies 11 with a minimum of 60% or higher, or equivalent For international applicants, IELTS 6.0 overall band score with no band below 5.5, or equivalent on other internationally recognized English Language Proficiency Tests
