The RN First Assistant Program provides a comprehensive grounding in principles and essential skills for Registered Nurses (RNs) and Nurse Practitioners (APRNs) to advance their careers in surgical and operating room settings as RN First Assistants (RNFAs).


Objectives:

  • Acquire a solid foundation in principles and intricate skills necessary for RNFA responsibilities, including scrubbing, draping, retracting, exposing, clamping, ligating, and suturing.
  • Develop an understanding of the RNFA role, implementation of standardized procedures, hemostasis, wound healing, and closure.
  • Gain knowledge of principles related to surgical emergencies, general surgery, urologic surgery, gynecologic surgery, anesthesia, and pharmacology.

Program Description:

The program consists of 52 hours of lecture and laboratory sessions, supplemented by a mandatory independent preceptorship (120 hours). Seasoned surgeons, clinical professionals, and perioperative nurse specialists impart knowledge and techniques crucial for assuming RNFA responsibilities. The RNFA role involves collaboration with both surgeons and patients.
