Learning Outcomes

Students in this course will learn to:


  • Produce, mix, and master one music project, which can be either a live band or a solo artist.
  • Discover techniques to finesse the best performances out of artists.
  • Explore the full potential of creating and producing music through the use of real and programmed instruments.
  • Understand how to record using software such as Logic and Pro Tools.
  • Obtain the best recording and mixing techniques, as well as microphone techniques for optimal recordings.

About This Course

This workshop-style class is designed to be hands-on and intensive, covering concepts such as choosing musicians and finessing performances. Students are required to produce, mix, and master a music project that incorporates both live and programmed instruments. The course is personalized to help each student explore their full potential in creating and producing music. Topics covered include pre-production, recording techniques, getting great vocal performances, mixing, mastering, and budgeting. Near the end of the course, student projects are played and critiqued in class.


Prerequisites

  • MUSC X 441.3 Audio Recording Theory.
  • Students must have access to a Pro Tools or Logic system and be proficient in either of these systems.

Schedule

The course is scheduled to run from April 1 to June 10, with classes held every Wednesday from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM PT. The instructor for the course is Mike McClellan, and it will be held at the UCLA Extension Lindbrook Center in Westwood.


Course Requirements

  • Internet access is required to retrieve course materials.
  • An audio interface.
  • A Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) such as Pro Tools, Logic, Ableton, or Cuebase.
  • A condenser microphone with cable, stand, and pop filter.
  • A MIDI controller.
  • A pair of closed-back studio headphones.
  • A pair of studio monitor speakers.
  • Subscription to a music streaming service (e.g., Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal).
