Program Overview


The University Preparation Program (UPP) is a free, open-entry program that provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary for success in university-level study. The program offers a range of core and elective units that cover essential topics such as writing, research, communication, mathematics, science, and learning theory. Upon successful completion, students are eligible to apply for admission to most undergraduate degree courses offered by the University of Tasmania.

Overview:

The University Preparation Program (UPP) is a free, open-entry program that does not require prior qualifications. The course is designed to explore a range of strategies and skills to support each student on their learning journey. Successful completion of UPP enables students to meet the general admission requirements for most undergraduate degree courses offered by the University of Tasmania. The University Preparation Program provides an opportunity for everyone to study at university. Delivered on campus or fully online, the program is flexible and is available for full-time and part-time students.


Objectives:

The University Preparation Program aims to explore learning content vital for success in different areas of study, as well as expose students to learning strategies that develop confidence and a sense of belonging. The program's units encompass writing, research, communication, mathematics, science, and learning theory. These units will develop students as strengths-based learners who can critically reflect on their unique learning journey. Students will be able to apply this knowledge to their future pathway.

Program Content and Structure:

The University Preparation Program comprises eight 12.5 credit point units (six core units and two discipline elective units):

Course Schedule:

The program is available for full-time and part-time students. It can be completed within one year for full-time students and up to three years for part-time students. The course is offered at the following campuses:

  • Hobart
  • Launceston
  • Cradle Coast

  • The course is offered in Semesters 1 and 2 at all campuses.

Core Units:

  • UPP010 Learning at University: Provides underpinning skills, theories, techniques, and strategies to prepare students for university-level study and to understand themselves as learners.
  • UPP014 Writing in Practice: Introduces the skills of academic writing by examining broad conventions.
  • Students will learn how to analyze assessment questions, plan and structure essays, build an academic language set, and write for the academic environment.
  • UPP015 Numeracy and Data in Practice: Focuses on the evaluation of quantitative information, in both everyday and academic situations.
  • Students will be introduced to research methodologies and frameworks to assess the reliability of online data sources.
  • UPP016 UPP Project A: Provides students with the opportunity to employ skills developed across a range of University Preparation Units to complete a guided research project.
  • Students will use techniques in research, analysis, problem-solving, reflection, and academic communication to investigate a topic of their choice.
  • UPP017 Communication Skills in Practice: Introduces a range of communication skills, strategies, techniques, and practices that enable effective communication and participation in the university environment, workplace, and community.
  • Students will develop and refine their oral and written communication skills through individual and collaborative activities.
  • UPP018 UPP Project B: Provides students with the opportunity to employ skills developed across a range of University Preparation Units to complete a guided research project.
  • Students will use techniques in research, analysis, problem-solving, reflection, and academic communication to investigate a topic of their choice.

Discipline Elective Units:

  • HAA001 Understanding this Region: Provides an interdisciplinary foundation in understanding the region of Tasmania, Australia, and the world.
  • Students will explore the unique and complex nature of the region through historical, geographical, social, and cultural perspectives.
  • XAB021 Academic Writing: Develops students' ability to communicate in written form in a university environment.
  • Students will gain the skills and develop strategies to plan and write academically.
  • XAB084 Introductory Scientific Principles: Provides foundational knowledge in theoretical and practical science.
  • Students will be introduced to scientific thinking and reasoning, methodology, precision and accuracy in measurement, written scientific communication, and laboratory techniques.
  • XAB090 Bridging Maths: Explores essential foundation skills and knowledge in mathematics.
  • Students will improve their maths skills, build self-confidence, develop logical thinking skills, and encourage good study habits to support independent study.
  • XAB091 Academic Numeracy: Develops the mathematical knowledge, skills, and confidence essential for further university study.
  • Students will explore and apply methods for gathering, presenting, and analyzing numerical information (data, graphs, statistics) and reasoning about relative quantities and relationships.

Assessment:

The University Preparation Program uses a range of assessment methods to evaluate student learning. These methods include:

  • Essays: Essays allow students to demonstrate their understanding of course content, critical thinking skills, and academic writing skills.
  • Reports: Reports provide students with the opportunity to synthesize information from multiple sources and present their findings in a clear and concise manner.
  • Presentations: Presentations enable students to develop and refine their oral communication skills, as well as their ability to present information in a visually engaging way.
  • Online quizzes: Online quizzes are used to assess student understanding of key concepts and provide timely feedback.
  • Participation: Participation in class discussions, workshops, and other activities is used to evaluate student engagement and understanding.
  • The assessment criteria for each unit are aligned with the learning outcomes. Students are provided with clear and detailed assessment rubrics so that they are aware of the expectations for success.

The University Preparation Program is taught by a team of experienced and dedicated academic staff. The program is delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials, workshops, and online learning.

This course is designed for applicants who do not meet general entry requirements for their chosen degree or who want a more supported or graded introduction to university study. There are no formal entry requirements for UPP.
