The Graduate Certificate in Research (X5A) is a program designed to provide Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates with the skills and training necessary to complete their research. It is part of the University's initiative to improve the quality of research environments and HDR graduates globally. All PhD and Research Masters candidates commencing after 1 January 2011 are required to participate in the program.

Core Units:
- XGR501 Introduction to Higher Degree by Research (12.5 credit points)
- XGR502 Communicating Research (12.5 credit points)
Elective Units:
- Students work with their primary supervisor to select Level 200-700 elective units that best support and complement their research program.
- Students may also enroll in Level 100 introductory language units with the primary supervisor's approval.

- XGR501 Introduction to Higher Degree by Research is offered in Semester 1 and the Spring school (extended).
- XGR502 Communicating Research is offered in Semester 2 and the Spring school (extended).
