Introduction to the Medicine (MD/MSc) Program
The Master of Science MD/MSc program is designed to help students develop advanced clinical and research skills, equipping them for a career as a clinical scientist. Program Details
The MD/MSc program is open to Canadian citizens or permanent residents who have been accepted or are currently enrolled in the Undergraduate Medical Education program in the Max Rady College of Medicine. The program is expected to take 2+ years to complete, in addition to the MD requirements.
Pathways to the MD/MSc Program
There are two pathways to the MD/MSc program:
- Traditional Pathway: Students take a sabbatical from their Doctor of Medicine program after completing their second year and before starting their third year (clerkship). During this break, they pursue a Master of Science in a health-related field.
- Graduate Student Pathway: Current graduate students in a health-related field who are accepted into the Doctor of Medicine program can apply for the MD/MSc program.
Funding and Allowances
Upon admission to the program, students receive a guaranteed Master of Science student stipend of $21,000, provided they maintain good academic standing. They are also eligible for up to $1,000 in research allowances during their time in the Doctor of Medicine/Master of Science program.
Regulations
Students enrolled in the Doctor of Medicine/Master of Science program must follow the supplemental regulations of both the host department for their graduate degree and the Max Rady College of Medicine.

Medical students can apply during any time within the first two years of the Doctor of Medicine program.
