The Classical and Medieval Studies Minor at East Tennessee State University offers students a platform for studying the languages, literatures, and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome, the Latin Middle Ages, and the Jewish and Christian societies of the ancient Mediterranean and Middle East.


Objectives:

Program Description:

Grounded in the study of one of three languages - Ancient Greek, Latin, or Hebrew - and interdisciplinary by nature, the Classical and Medieval Studies Minor offers a rigorous, well-rounded course of study that complements any major field of study at ETSU. The study of classical languages sharpens English skills, giving polish to spelling, grammar, and rhetoric. A background in classics strengthens one's candidacy for admission to postgraduate programs in humanities, medicine, law, or the sciences.

  • GREK 2010 - Intermediate Ancient Greek I (3 credits) and GREK 2020 - Intermediate Ancient Greek II (3 credits)
  • or LATN 2010 - Second-Year Latin (3 credits) and LATN 2020 - Second-Year Latin (3 credits)
  • or Hebrew - the equivalent attainment in Hebrew (from another institution) (6 credits)
  • LATN 4910 - Special Topics in Classical Latin (3 credits)
  • or GREK 4910 - Special Topics in Classical Greek (3 credits)
