Profile of the Programme

The Social Work Programme aims to:

1. Equip students with the appropriate knowledge, skills and values ​​to enable them to function effectively in a pluralistic, intercultural and interdisciplinary environment.
2. Prepare students for postgraduate and doctoral education in Social Work and related sciences.
3. Combine theoretical, clinical and practical training to apply assessment and intervention techniques to a variety of social and psycho-emotional difficulties.
4. Offer students the ability to collaborate with other health and welfare professionals to maintain the social and mental health of service users.
5. Equip graduates with skills to understand and participate in research in the fields of Social Work, Social Administration and Social Policy.
6. Delve into the most modern research trends in the field of Social Work and Social Policy.
7. Promote the cultivation of critical thinking and the development of an informed reasoning that guides clinical decisions in both prevention and intervention in crisis situations.
8. Strengthen the academic background and scientific training of graduates in Evidence Based Practice in the fields of Social Work, Social Policy and Administration.

Obtaining the Bachelor of Social Work provides a professional career with immediate employment in different areas such as:

• Various programs funded by the private or voluntary sector e.g. substance abuse prevention and treatment programs.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates of the programme can be accepted into Second Cycle degrees (Master’s Degree).

Academic Admission

The minimum admission requirement to an undergraduate programme of study is a recognized High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) or equivalent internationally recognized qualification(s). Students with a lower HSLC grade than 7.5/10 or 15/20 or equivalent depending on the grading system of the country issuing the HSLC are provided with extra academic guidance and monitoring during the first year of their studies.

English Language Proficiency

The list below provides the minimum English Language Requirements (ELR) for enrollment to the programme of study. Students who do not possess any of the qualifications or stipulated grades listed below and hold IELTS with 4.5 and above, are required to take UNIC’s NEPTON English Placement Test (with no charge) and will receive English Language support classes.

Assessment

Course assessment usually comprises of a comprehensive final exam and continuous assessment. Continuous assessment can include amongst others, mid-terms, projects and class participation.

Letter grades are calculated based on the weight of the final exam and the continuous assessment and the actual numerical marks obtained in these two assessment components. Based on the course grades the student’s semester grade point average (GPA) and cumulative point average (CPA) are calculated.

Graduation

The student must complete 240 ECTS and all programme requirements.

A minimum cumulative grade point average (CPA) of 2.0 is required. Thus, although a ‘D-‘ is a PASS grade, in order to achieve a CPA of 2.0 an average grade of ‘C’ is required.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, the students should be able to:

1. They recognize the values ​​and principles of the code of ethics of the profession.
2. They apply theoretical approaches and research data in the science of Social Work during the practice of the profession.
3. Understand and apply research methods in Social Work, including study design, data analysis and interpretation of scientific findings.
4. To use critical and creative thinking, exploratory questioning and a scientific approach in solving problems related to behavior and cognitive processes.
5. Understand and apply principles of Social Work to solve social and administrative problems.
6. Demonstrate proficiency in knowledge and ability to use electronic systems and other technologies for various purposes.
7. Recognize, understand and respect the complexity of socio-cultural and international diversity in which they may work as social workers.
8. Develop awareness of their own and others’ behavior and cognitive processes, and effectively apply self-management strategies of self-improvement and self-sufficiency within interdisciplinary contexts.
9. They use advocacy and negotiation skills and knowledge defending the human rights of the service users.
