Overview
The Enhanced Clinical Practitioner (ECP) programme allows you to develop ECP competencies aligned to the knowledge, skills and behaviours identified in the apprenticeship occupational standards, within your scope of practice. The programme aims to equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to elevate your skills and knowledge to an enhanced level of practice within a multi-disciplinary team.
Course Structure
There will be a range of learning strategies employed throughout the modules, which will include flipped classroom, keynote lectures, seminars, problem-based/case-based learning, simulation, involvement of Patient, Carer and Public partnerships within the programme providing the learner with opportunities for engagement and success.
Modules
The programme consists of three modules, each of 20 credits. The overall award is a Post-graduate certificate made up of 60 credits, at level 7. There are no optional modules within this programme.
- Foundations of Enhanced Practice (20 credits) This module has been designed to help you develop key transferable skills required as an enhanced clinical practitioner. You’ll engage with the evidence base that underpins your clinical practice, educational, and leadership roles in your clinical area. You’ll have the opportunity to enhance your writing skills to the level required of postgraduate study and you’ll begin to engage with the evidence base required for enhanced practice within your scope of practice.
- Enhanced Leadership and Learning in Practice (20 credits) Develop your leadership and educational skills which are essential to the role of an enhanced clinical practitioner. This will be achieved through critically engaging with the evidence base underpinning your role in your clinical area, helping you to be a better leader and clinical educator.
- Skills for Enhanced Practice (20 credits) Build on the key skills required of your role as an enhanced clinical practitioner through engaging with the evidence base that will underpin your clinical practice. You’ll also have the opportunity to put the patient management, educational, and leadership skills developed in earlier modules into practice.
Facilities
The course will be delivered primarily on-line. There may be a small number of clinical sessions and these will be delivered at City Campus Sunderland.

Entry Requirements
- You should hold a first degree (e.g., BSc (Hons) or equivalent. However, applicants without this are welcome to discuss their application with the programme leader.
- You should also be registered with the appropriate professional and/or regulatory body (e.g., NMC, HCPC, etc.) and employed within a trainee ECP role.
- Your employer should provide a job role/description before enrolment (or develop one in tandem with the programme team), and employers must support the applicant.
Fees and Finance
Larger organisations can use their apprenticeship levy and government top-up to pay tuition and professional fees of higher apprenticeships. For smaller employers, the government pays 95%, with the remainder co-invested by the business.
Career Ready
Enhanced Clinical Practice (ECP) will work alongside Advanced Clinical Practice. It is a destination role in its own right, offering services and patients a consistent level of expertise, working in discrete areas of patient pathways.
