Advanced Paediatric Clinical Management Skills Level 7

Overview

This 20-credit Level 7 module will offer you the opportunity to develop your advanced communication, clinical assessment, examination, and clinical decision-making and management skills in your field of practice.

Working at an advanced level of clinical practice, in a role that requires the assessment and management of children, you'll develop the ability to critically analyse, synthesise and review care decisions by discussing, debating and reviewing alternative approaches to care delivery that meet the medico-legal requirements for advanced practice and have ethical, moral and safeguarding principles embedded throughout.

Using a range of learning opportunities both in the university and workplace, practitioners can develop, refine, and consolidate their learning experiences as they obtain the required skills for Advanced Paediatric practice
• The programme is led, taught and supported by a range of advanced practitioners from a variety of clinical backgrounds in the care of children and young people to ensure the educational approaches utilised in the programme are both clinically current and embedded in clinical practice

Course structure

This module is delivered fully face-to-face at City Campus via interactive lectures, simulations, and problem-based learning. There is a total of 90 hours contact time with additional self-directed study available via the virtual learning environment.

You'll typically be on campus on a Tuesday where your day will comprise of:

• 9am–11am: Epidemiology of common and rare conditions, diagnostic criteria, and assessment tools
• 11:30am–13:30pm: Assessment, treatment, and management planning theory
• 2pm–4pm: Clinical assessment theory and practice via simulated patient interactions

Assessment

• Assessment 1: Assignment. Theoretically you'll deconstruct a complex case from practice and critically appraise the care decisions made, the interventions undertaken and identify, debate and analyse the key components of your decision-making. Reviewing the outcome of the case to critically appraise and justify the clinical actions taken in a written report.
• Assessment 2: Objectively Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). You'll undertake a 25-minute single-station OSCE, in which you'll demonstrate consultation and clinical history skills, advanced physical assessment, diagnostic reasoning, and management skills.

Entry requirements

• Registered healthcare professional, registered with the NMC/HCPC
• Provide evidence of a level 6 study
• Work within a clinical role where the assessment and examination of children and young people is required.

You will need a clinical supervisor in practice who is able to support development of the advanced clinical management of children and young people.

The fee for this course is £840.

Career ready

This module can be studied as a standalone CPD option for healthcare professionals wishing to credential as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner with NHS England (formerly Health Education England).

Alternatively, this module can be studied as part of the MSc Advanced Clinical Practitioner apprenticeship.
